Rae Lewis, author of Jump on the Love Train and founder of the Chicuchas Wasi Organization, will be at Readers’ Books for the launch of her book on Wednesday, August 7th, with a 6:30 reception and a 7:00 reading. The book tells the story behind the birth of Chicuchas Wasi, which is dedicated to providing free education to poor an indigenous girls in Cusco, Peru. The story begins with Ms. Lewis’s 1985 trip to Peru, where she drank in the majestic Andean mountains and the blend of indigenous Quechua and Mestizo cultures in the city of Cusco, the former capital of the Incan empire. But as she spent more time in the city, she became witness to the many neglected and discarded children, trying to survive on their own. She was drawn back to Cusco, looking for a way to do something to help these children. By 1996, Ms. Lewis moved to Cusco and founded the Chicuchas Wasi Organization. She lived in their emergency shelter program for the next ten years while building her team. For the last thirty-two years, Chicuchas Wasi has been dedicated to serve the children most in need and give them the tools needed to survive and thrive.

Ms. Lewis was born in San Francisco and raised in Sausalito, California. She and her husband and three sons later settled in rural Sonoma County. Rae has many skills from a variety of professions: registered nurse in several local hospitals, real estate professional, and worked in many aspects of her family business as a teenager where she gained many skills that proved useful later running a non-profit.
